I started examining to help my teaching, and it has noticeably  improved my ability to teach and to prepare and coach candidates.

Academic:

Critical Thinking - Head of Department

This is about skills, and sharpening candidates for all their other A Levels.  When we started teaching this the Heads of Maths and Science reported that CT skills helped candidates in their subjects. It has also helped us prepare for Oxbridge, American SATs and Law and Medical pre-university examinations.   

History - Head of Department

This is my favourite teaching.  A-level has been Early Modern, GCSE Modern World and also Social and Economic specifications. 

Other Teaching:

Religious Studies (Church History) at A-Level.

French Literature and coursework at A-Level. French GCSE; French for Business; Sports Studies (History of Sport) AS; British Constitution to AO level; Religious Studies GCSE; Junior Ancient History. 

One bonus of long service at a small school is that one gets to teach all sorts of things one likes – giving me experience well beyond my History.

Beyond the subjects

I have always believed in going beyond subject teaching.  I have been built both General Studies teaching in the 6^th Form and Activities programmes for the juniors.

Pastoral:

Possibly my greatest contribution to Monkton was, with my wife, setting up one of two new girls’ houses and playing an important part in the successful launching of co-education at the school. I feel passionately about equal opportunities for the sexes.
